I have done some further research and found that there was another McCarty on the Underhill. I appologize for assuming that the Norman McCarty name was a mistake, as I have learned of Norman's heroic actions on that fatefull day.

If anyone who visits this site knows anything about my uncle personally or even through stories from a surviving relative, I would be more than interested in hearing them. I noticed that on the In Memory page, it asks about a Norman McCarty. I am not sure if he is any relation of mine or if maybe the name is incorrect and was supposed to be Gordon. Please feel free to contact me, because i have pictures of my uncle in uniform from a few months before he left to fulfill his duties to this nation that I would gladly post.

My cousin, Lieutenant Joseph N. Christie (Joseph's mother was my father's sister), was killed on the Underhill. My brother, cousins, and I
grew up with the stories about him, and from time to time I have been struck (most recently in the Washington Post's coverage of the
opening of the WWII Memorial) to read accounts from the survivors. The work of those survivors -- and their descendants -- in preserving
the memory of their ship and their shipmates is a moving and impressive tribute.

Here is an entry from my grandfather's diary from WWII, written aboard the USS Charles E. Brannon (DE-446): "July 27, 1945. We are off the Northern coast of Luzon at sea. The D.E. Underhill 682 was sunk by a Jap suicide sub torpedo the afternoon of July 25. We passed the spot about noon today. One of the other ships picked up 4 bodies and gave them a burial at see. The Underhill had caught up with us when we were underway from Bora Bora to Marrianas."

My 90 year-old grandfather, Merle Kimble, served aboard the USS Charles E. Brannon (DE-446). He still recalls the USS D.E. Underhill steaming alongside his own ship. He can scarcely speak of her loss without getting all teary-eyed. God Bless those poor men lost in the sinking.

My brother's dad Frank F. Grandinetti was killed in action on the USS Underhill on July 24, 1945. My mom remarried my dad, and we all went down for the 50th reunion in 1995. I would love to hear more about the reunions and see more photos of the ship.

It's the eve before 4th of July and I was watching CNN interview WWII veterans who had served in the Pacific and decided to look up the details of the Underhill.

I found this site and think it's terrific and would love to see more photos. I have some old ones and I will look for them and try to scan them in and send them to you.

Thanks for having this great site.

My father-in-law (Lawrence R. Towns) is a survivor of the USS Underhill. He was assigned to the Underhill from its commissioning until it sank. He has his Purple Heart framed. I always enjoy the stories he tells of the days he spent on the ship and at various ports, and of course of the big event. He is eighty years old now and I'm going to try to get him to go to the reunion this year. Thanks to all the sailors that defended our great nation.

Thanks for putting this site together.
I am the nephew of Lester Hughes, one of the many fine men who gave their lives on the Underhill.
My grandmother would have appreciated this site as much as I have if she were still with us. She never knew the complete story of what happened to my uncle or his shipmates which I always felt was tragic. I think the details you have provided could have helped answer many of her questions and helped her cope with her loss a bit easier. He was her eldest son and a very honorable man who took care of and provided for his family in the absence of a father. It is comforting to know he lived his final days with a group of men who were every bit as honorable as himself.
I cannot begin to understand the sacrifice he and his shipmates offered that day in July, but it makes me proud to say I am related to Lester and I will never forget his act of courage.
The information you have put together here has helped his family a great deal, thank you for your time and work, it has not gone to waste.

I have visited this site many times. It is in a way for me, a special rememberance to my dad, Harold R. DeAtley, who was a surviver of the U.S.S. Underhill. Daddy died in 1985, and I still miss him. This wonderful web site is such a heart warming tribute to ALL the men on board this ship, and yet it is so very special to me, because it lets me sit back and remember how my dad would occasionally start telling his tales of life on board ship. I guess you could say, in a special sort of way it helps keep my dad alive in some small way.

I enjoy coming back every now and again just to see all the new things you have added, and learn even more about this ship and the men that served on board.

Thanks once again for such a WONDERFUL web site.

Dear Jay:
I wanted to say that Rodger Crum will be missed greatly.
He was interesting to talk to about all the Underhill concerns. It was his work that started the reunions again in the 80's and his help in creating the website along with Jay. He will be in our hearts for a long time. Maybe he and my Dad are having a conversation on the fantail!

I hadn't been to the site in a little while, and am so impressed with the latest additions. Of course, we were much with the Underhill, its crew, and families as 7/24/2002 came, and went, and everyday! For the last hour, I've been downloading printed copies for those of us who are benefactors of the bravery, dedication, and heroics of the Underhill crew, and for youngsters in school who are learning "Freedom Isn't Free," war isn't a game, American History, and who they owe for the good life they enjoy by such studies. Our undying gratitude! And warmest regards to each! P.A. Arnold

This is to give a little more detail on Peggy's note dated April 17. Georgia Newcomb, widow of LCDR Robert M. Newcomb, died peacefully in her sleep on April 15, 2002, at age 105. My wife (her oldest granddaughter) and I had visited her a few days earlier and had a pleasant time together. She thought highly of the men of the Underhill and was pleased that you remembered her. Although not immune to the effects of advanced age on her vision and hearing, she was blessed to avoid chronic debilitating illness. According to her wishes her body was cremated and the ashes interred at Nut Plains Cemetery in Guilford, Connecticut. Yesterday (May 5, 2002) we had a graveside memorial service attended by many family and friends, including a great-great-granddaughter. We rejoice in her memory and are glad to have known her.

This is for Beth Tracy. For those of you
that watch JAG, Beth Tracy was the executive
assistant to Don Bellisario. It was through
her efforts that the information about the
Underhill was read. Executives are "swamped",
in her words with this material. The Underhills
story was one of many that are similar because of battle
action, but special to us because we lost many
who were dear to us. Don Bellisario and Beth Tracy
saw something special in us... hopefully someday
the Underhill's read story will be told . Thank you
Beth Tracy

My name is Randi, I am the RN at Morningside Assisted Living in Sumter, South Carolina. I became aware
of the Underhill through one of our Residents and crew member, LC Patterson. Mr. Patterson does not have email yet
, but he is considering getting a computer in his room, so he can get online himself. I would be happy, until that time, to
print any email others might like to write to Mr. P.

The homepage listed is not really a homepage, but just a beautiful poem written by Doug Patterson, the son of an Underhill
crew member, LC Patterson.
I thought
that it deserved it's own place, and gave it that special place.
I saw to it that our local newspaper, the Item, wrote a story about the Special Navy Citation, and am putting a link to
that also for others to read.

I signed this way back in Aug. of 98, man how time flies!! I have resigned to give my updated e-mail address and to see if anyone knows how to get hold of TOMKOWIAK, FLORIAN J.
I saw his name on the survivors list and remembered it immediately. Daddy (Harold R. DeAtley) used to mention this man every now and again. Would just like to tell him, he had been remembered very fondly, by my dad.

The homepage address I put there is a link to a Spades team home page I made for my spades team. It is just a fun thing I did and thought I would share it with you all. It is quite lengthy 12 pages and takes a while to go through but is a fun site too.

Back to this site, as I have said so many times before this is the ONLY place I have been able to find USS Underhill info and Thanks so very much to EVERONE that has participated in making it so.

Sent here by a crewmember of the Leslie L.B. Knox which was replaced by the Underhill on its last mission. My father was also a crewmember of the Knox. Obviously this site has a special meaning for me!

Great site...good talking with you today; as you know, I'm also very interested in WWII, specifically the Pacific theater (my dad's participation). I'll bookmark the site, and return later.

An addendum to my earlier message. If you can read this, you already know your way around the Internet, well enough. Will have to rely on you to pass along my Dad's message..."give cyberspace a try"...to those who don't. Thanks.

My Dad, Eugene Wagstaff (Waggy), was an electrician in the engine room on the USS Underhill. He visits this website regularly, and enjoys keeping up with what's going on with surviving shipmates and families. He's got a message for all of you who won't touch a computer..."It's a piece of cake...give cyberspace a try, and then send me an e-mail!" (His e-mail is: desalty@aol.com) He and my mother are still living in Salt Lake City, so if you're ever out that way....

I met several of the surviving crewmembers, when I went to the 1998, and 99 reunions at Annapolis....what a bunch of great guys! My Dad (Gene), Mother (Betty), Son (Ken), and good friend (Dwight) attended with me, last year. We didn't make it to the 2000 reunion, but hoping to get the family back to Annapolis for the 2001 event.

Great resource and information center for everyone with ties to the Underhill and related navy concerns. My father was Stanley Dace and a chief aboard the Underhill. I am new to the internet and do not yet know the exact e-mail address to give. However you can reach me at 99 wildwood terrace Sullivan, Missouri 63080. It was hard for my father to tell what happened the day the Underhill was sunk. We did not know much until a few years before he died. We never heard him complain I suppose he was grateful to see America again and live a normal life. We do know that the Underhill was special to him and its crew. I have been in contact with my representatives in Congress to look into a possible citation for the ship's crew for honor under fire. Senator Ashcroft has been successful in getting awards for Joe Manory and Stanley Dace. If anyone remembers hearing 55 years ago about a possible ship's citation please let us know. Cheryl Jones

I truly enjoyed learning about the USS Underhill. My uncle, Baxter Wayne Garrett, was killed that day on
24 July 45. It was great finally learning about what happened, as almost all my kin on my uncle's side has
passed and I had no real way to learn about his navy life and those who perished with him. Thank you for the
site, and I would enjoy any e-mail from other family members, especially any of the survivors of that day that
may have know him.

Tracy Quinn <tquinn@adlerbooks.com> from Washington, DC

Do you have any letters written by you or your family during the time you or they served in World War II? If so, I need your help!

I am researching a book entitled World War II Letters edited by Walter Cronkite, which is a collection of letters from servicemen and women to their friends, families, or sweethearts back home. This book is aimed at capturing the war as seen through the eyes of participants around the world. It will also depict the daily life of WWII soldiers. World War II Letters will have letters from soldiers from every country involved in the Second World War. WWII Letters will be published by Knopf next year.

I would love to publish letters written by servicemen and women from all over the world in the book and hope that you will take this chance to commemorate an important time in world history.

Please note that at this time we are not looking for photos, other war memorabilia, or letters written from the home front to servicemen and women, but if the publisher decides later that it is something they want to include, I will be sure to be in touch with you again.

Also, please note that I am looking for letters that have not been previously published in any form. I must have either the letter writer’s permission or someone who is able to give permission to reprint the letter(s) in Mr. Cronkite’s collection. (If the excerpt/letter is selected to be included in the book, a permission letter will be sent at a later date.) Please try to include the letter writer’s rank, circumstances surrounding the time the letter was written, details of soldier’s tour of duty, etc.basically, any additional information that would add to the letter. Also, please include your complete contact information so that I can stay in touch and let you know the progress of the book. If the letter is not written in English and you can translate it, that would be wonderful; if not, we will get a translation done. Lastly, please send only legible, photocopied letters before the end of July, which is our deadline.

If you have any questions about this book, I would be happy to answer them. (E-mail is the best way to reach me, and my address is tquinn@adlerbooks.com.)

I really appreciate your help. Without your support, this book would not be possible.

I may be contacted at the following address:
