Bob Netko <rnetko@msn.com> from Minneapolis, Mn,
I was an Electronic Technician crewman aboard LST 991 and was an eyewitness when the Underhill was sunk. I am 78 now but will to the best of my memory describe what we saw. July 24th was a clear sunny morning and I was up on our ships bridge having coffee with the voice radioman, when we saw a plane out on the eastern horizon at about 0830. We thought it was a Jap Dinah and the radioman reported it to the Underhill and was told that they had it spotted. We went to GQ for some time but when the plane took no hostile action we went back to normal routine. Around noon our screening force started getting sonar contacts indicating there were Jap subs around and they started hunting the subs and dropping depth charges. Since an LST has a maximum flank speed of 14 knots and it's only armament was 20 and 40mm surface guns, we could only continue steaming as directed by the Task Group Commander and hope that our screening ships could protect us. We also saw a floating mine sail by our ship about 30 yards out, which we were later informed was a dud. Around 1530 the radioman on the Underhill shouted, "we see one dead ahead, we're going in to ram him!!!" At this time the Underhill was about 500 yards aft of our starboard beam sailing in the same direction. There was then a tremendous explosion and the whole front half of the Underhill disappeared and the stern half tipped up. After that most of the screening craft set about rescueing the survivors while the rest continued hunting the subs but that was pretty much the end of the action and rescue operations continued the rest of the day. By 1900 we could no longer see the stern half but could hear the gunfire when it was sunk by order of Fleet Command.

The following day a PBY float plane came out and took some of the badly wounded back to Manila while the dead were given burials at sea with short services by the ships Captains I believe our ship buried 9 men.

I didn't know anything else about the Underhill, but for 59 years I have thought about them now and then, thinking how tragic it was to happen when the war was essentialy over. I finally decided today to look for the U.S. Underhill sinking on GooGle and found this wonderful web site. To any of you still surviving I say thank you from the bottom of my heart for making my long and fruitful life possible. MY wife and I have 7 chidren and 16 Grandchildren. For the ones have died, both at sea and afterwards, my wish is that they are resting in peace and perpetual life shines upon them.

My cousin, Lieutenant Joseph N. Christie (Joseph's mother was my father's sister), was killed on the Underhill. My brother, cousins, and I

the memory of their ship and their shipmates is a moving and impressive tribute.

Underhill 682 was sunk by a Jap suicide sub torpedo the afternoon of July 25. We passed the spot about noon today. One of the other ships picked up 4 bodies and gave them a burial at see. Thanks for putting this site together.
I am the nephew of Lester Hughes, one of the many fine men who gave their lives on the Underhill.
My grandmother would have appreciated this site as much as I have if she were still with us. She never knew the complete story of what happened to my uncle or his shipmates which I always felt was tragic. I think the details you have provided could have helped answer many of her questions and helped her cope with her loss a bit easier. He was her eldest son and a very honorable man who took care of and provided for his family in the absence of a father. It is comforting to know he lived his final days with a group of men who were every bit as honorable as himself.
I cannot begin to understand the sacrifice he and his shipmates offered that day in July, but it makes me proud to say I am related to Lester and I will never forget his act of courage.
The information you have put together here has helped his family a great deal, thank you for your time and work, it has not gone to waste.

I have visited this site many times. It is in a way for me, a special rememberance to my dad, Harold R. DeAtley, who was a surviver of the U.S.S. Underhill. Daddy died in 1985, and I still miss him. This wonderful web site is such a heart warming tribute to ALL the men on board this ship, and yet it is so very special to me, because it lets me sit back and remember how my dad would occasionally start telling his tales of life on board ship. I guess you could say, in a special sort of way it helps keep my dad alive in some small way.

I enjoy coming back every now and again just to see all the new things you have added, and learn even more about this ship and the men that served on board.

Thanks once again for such a WONDERFUL web site.

Kathy

I have just discoved the web page for the Underhill. It is fantastic! I am the son of Lt. Floyd Powell Carrington who was killed when the Underhill went down 24-7-45. I was 2 years old when that happened and do not remember ever seeing my father. My mother, Sue, has told me a great deal about him and his service on the Underhill. She is still living in Parsons, TN and is doing well. She never remarried and I am their only child. I would love to hear from some of the survivors that may remember my father. I am told that he was a lot of fun to be around. It would be incredible to learn more about him from some of his shipmates
It is wonderful that some many people remember the men of the Underhill and honor them with this web page.

This is to give a little more detail on Peggy's note dated April 17. Georgia Newcomb, widow of LCDR Robert M. Newcomb, died peacefully in her sleep on April 15, 2002, at age 105. My wife (her oldest granddaughter) and I had visited her a few days earlier and had a pleasant time together. She thought highly of the men of the Underhill and was pleased that you remembered her. Although not immune to the effects of advanced age on her vision and hearing, she was blessed to avoid chronic debilitating illness. According to her wishes her body was cremated and the ashes interred at Nut Plains Cemetery in Guilford, Connecticut. Yesterday (May 5, 2002) we had a graveside memorial service attended by many family and friends, including a great-great-granddaughter. We rejoice in her memory and are glad to have known her.

This is for Beth Tracy. For those of you
that watch JAG, Beth Tracy was the executive
assistant to Don Bellisario. It was through
her efforts that the information about the
Underhill was read. Executives are "swamped",
in her words with this material. The Underhills
story was one of many that are similar because of battle
action, but special to us because we lost many
who were dear to us. Don Bellisario and Beth Tracy
saw something special in us... hopefully someday
the Underhill's read story will be told . Thank you

To all our Underhill family: I'm pleased to report that I just left John Maki at the hospital and he's doing fine and anxious to get home! Doctor says he'll be able to run the Zamboni again soon. Surgery went great. (He says he's STILL the best damn fireman in the Navy!)

Thanks to all for your kind wishes.

Mickey Wagner (John's taxi driver to the reunions!)

Just a note to let all our Underhill friends know that John Maki, Underhill survivor and long-time reunion attendee, suffered a minor heart attack on Saturday, August 4th, 2001. I'm very glad to report that John is doing good and is scheduled to undergo a quadruple bypass Tuesday the 7th. He is at St. Vincent Hospital at 232 West 25 Street, Erie, PA 16544 814-452-5800 for patient room information. I know John would love to hear from his buddies. Any e-mails we receive will be greatly appreciated and forwarded to him as soon as possible. Take care all. See you next year! Mickey Wagner

http://www.geocities.com/randikay/ShavingKit.html
My name is Randi, I am the RN at Morningside Assisted Living in Sumter, South Carolina. I became aware
of the Underhill through one of our Residents and crew member, LC Patterson. Mr. Patterson does not have email yet
, but he is considering getting a computer in his room, so he can get online himself. I would be happy, until that time, to
print any email others might like to write to Mr. P.

The homepage listed is not really a homepage, but just a beautiful poem written by Doug Patterson, the son of an Underhill
crew member, LC Patterson.
I thought
that it deserved it's own place, and gave it that special place.
I saw to it that our local newspaper, the Item, wrote a story about the Special Navy Citation, and am putting a link to
that also for others to read.
http://www.theitem.com/CityDesk/010528c_news.html

Mr Patterson has been looking for addresses of any crew members, especially Ed M. Hancock and Rodger Crum.

Rodger, thanks so much for this site for others to learn from!

Hello Everyone,
My mother,Ruth Dace, was in a car accident May 2. She
is doing fine, but does have problems with correspondence. She is able to write some but her modem on the computer
was disabled by lightning storm. If you need newsletters
or communication by e-mail please send them this way. She
is planning on being at the reunion this summer. We have
discovered several new relatives through this great site. Thank you Rodger and Jay.

My father's oldest brother was aboard when the USS Underhill went down, Richard Johnson. Hi All,

I signed this way back in Aug. of 98, man how time flies!! I have resigned to give my updated e-mail address and to see if anyone knows how to get hold of TOMKOWIAK, FLORIAN J.
I saw his name on the survivors list and remembered it immediately. Daddy (Harold R. DeAtley) used to mention this man every now and again. Would just like to tell him, he had been remembered very fondly, by my dad.

The homepage address I put there is a link to a Spades team home page I made for my spades team. It is just a fun thing I did and thought I would share it with you all. It is quite lengthy 12 pages and takes a while to go through but is a fun site too.

Back to this site, as I have said so many times before this is the ONLY place I have been able to find USS Underhill info and Thanks so very much to EVERONE that has participated in making it so.

Kathy

On the wall above where he sat in our home town church, there is a plaque for Joseph E. Ott, who went down with the Underhill. I looked at it again the other day at church and decided I'd like to know more about this sad day, so I came to my computer. I usually don't have much luck when I try to look something up and was surprised and pleased at what I found. Keep up the good work and I will return again. Joe was single and had two sisters and 3 nephews. I was hoping I would find somebody from his family had been looking for more information on the USS Underhill.

My uncle served aboard the USS Kenyon, the sister ship to the USS Underhill. I was always interested in his stories, and he has sinced passed away, and now I have access to the computer and was looking up the ships. I am so happy that the Navy has decided to give due recognition to the Underhill. I have not visited all the sites for the Underhill yet, but I am in the process of doing so.

My grandfather, Glen Kearney, served on the USS Underhill. He was a surviver on the ship, but he passed away when I was very young. I never had a chance to find out about his life in the Navy. If anyone remembers him or has information, pictures, or anything that might help me learn a little more about him, i would appreciate anything you could share with me. Thanks to all who served, not just on the Underhill, but in anyway to keep our country free.
Wendy

My uncle, Wilfred Soucy was one of the survivors of the USS Underhill. At Thanksgiving this year, his sister brought out his Purple Heart and photo of the Underhill. It really encouraged me to look up more information. I know my uncle was very proud to serve.

I am happy that I finally found your site. It has been difficult to find info on the Underhill. What is more exciting is that 2 of my cousins, unbeknownst to me, have signed your guestbook in memory of our grandfather, T.F. Patterson. I concur with Kim and Chris about this wonderful website and appreciate the reference to our grandfather. I have just recently had one of those great grandkids that Kim talks about and she will know of her great grandfather because of your site. Many thanks and hello Kim and Chris Patterson.
